Nutrition plays a crucial role in the growth, development, and health of children. Adequate nutrition is essential for preventing malnutrition, promoting cognitive development, and supporting immune function. Nurses, especially pediatric nurses, are responsible for educating parents and caregivers about proper feeding practices and monitoring children's nutritional status. However, in many regions, including Katsina State, there is concern about inadequate knowledge among healthcare professionals about pediatric nutrition, which may lead to poor feeding practices and increased rates of childhood malnutrition (Musa et al., 2024).
In Katsina State, a combination of cultural beliefs, socioeconomic factors, and limited access to healthcare resources may contribute to improper nutritional practices. Nurses are often the primary caregivers who interact with families and can play a pivotal role in shaping attitudes toward nutrition. Understanding the knowledge and practices of nurses regarding pediatric nutrition is essential for identifying gaps and improving child health outcomes in this region.
This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and practices of nurses regarding pediatric nutrition in Katsina State, with a focus on assessing their ability to provide accurate information to parents and promote healthy feeding habits.
In Katsina State, childhood malnutrition remains a significant health challenge, with a high prevalence of undernutrition, stunting, and other nutrition-related issues. While nurses are central to the promotion of proper nutrition, their knowledge and practices may not align with current best practices in pediatric nutrition. This gap can negatively affect child health outcomes, particularly in rural and underserved areas where access to nutrition education is limited.
This study seeks to evaluate the level of knowledge and the practices of nurses regarding pediatric nutrition, in order to identify areas for improvement and enhance their ability to promote healthy feeding practices.
This study will focus on pediatric nurses working in healthcare facilities in Katsina State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and direct observations. Limitations may include sample size constraints and variability in nursing practices based on local conditions and resources.
